Two Way Radios Keep Military Safe for Almost 80 Years
As with many technologies, two way radios have developed and become vastly different over the years – improving and better meeting the demands of its users.
One thing that has remained consistent is two way radios contribution to Canadian history – and this goes back to World War II when two way radios were first invented. Widely nicknamed the ‘walkie-talkie’ the Motorola SCR-300 was created by an engineering team at the Galvin Manufacturing Company in 1940 (since renamed Motorola).
While first used for infantry levels of military, other designs were also created and used in artillery and tank units as well – spreading to job sites and commercial use after – and now widely used around the world.
But without previous Canadian inventions, it’s important to question whether two way radios would have come to be. There is, of course, the development of telephone communication in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. The first transmission of speech by radio followed in 1900 by Reginald Fessenden, also known as the “father of radio” which would later lead to the first two way radiotelegraphic communication across the Atlantic. This was followed shortly thereafter by Guglielmo Marconi having the world’s first transatlantic wireless signal from Signal Hill in 1901, and in 1902 a wireless antenna beaming a wireless message across the Atlantic.
Each of these moments have not only shaped Canadian history, but the future of telecommunications around the world.
Since then, and for nearly 80 years, members of the Canadian military have relied on Motorola two way radios to keep their members safe and out of harm’s way. And today’s two way radio technology (while it has changed vastly since it was invented) is suited to be an important tool for day-to-day use, along with the toughest conditions faced by Canadian, and international military.
In the military, and in tough work environments such as public safety and emergency services, connection and communication among team members is critical. You shouldn’t settle for anything less than the best technology in these situations, and radio technology has reigned supreme as the best source for communication – due to their excellent durability and reliable features.
Imagine a tool that, with the touch of a button, can communicate with fellow team members within sight or miles away. Imagine when you do a call out, a technology that lessens the sound in the background to ensure you hear the message the first time – and when it matters most.
On top of that, users have benefited from a durability that outweighs all the bumps and bruises teams face, along with extra battery life, and secure conversations – crucial in a number of situations through accessories such as earpieces and headsets that are built for military grade operations.
These changes to two way radio technology have been crucial to not only military members, but all the industries that continue to rely on two way communication. From office to manufacturing floor, roadside stop to military action, Motorola has developed a technology you can rely on and one we here at Nova Communications are proud to sell.
